Our Beliefs

The following Statement of Faith and Core Beliefs are hereby affirmed as essential to the function and operation of Alignment Association, LLC (“Alignment”):

*All Scriptures utilize the New American Standard Bible (NASB) unless otherwise noted.

  1. THE GREAT COMMANDMENT

“You [followers of Christ] shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.” – Matthew 22:37-40

  2. THE GREAT COMMISSION

“All authority has been given to Me [Jesus] in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” – Matthew 28:18-20

  3. UNITY IN THOUGHT AND PURPOSE

“Now I exhort you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all agree and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be made complete in the same mind and in the same judgment.” – 1 Corinthians 1:10

“Therefore if there is any encouragement in Christ, if there is any consolation of love, if there is any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and compassion, make my joy complete by being of the same mind, maintaining the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose.” – Philippians 2:1-2

  4. UNITY IN ESSENTIAL BELIEFS

“There is one body and one Spirit, just as also you were called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all who is over all and through all and in all.” – Ephesians 4:4-6

  5. LIBERTY IN NON-ESSENTIAL BELIEFS

“Now accept the one who is weak in faith, but not for the purpose of passing judgment on his opinions... For we will all stand before the judgment seat of God.” – Romans 14:1-10

  6. CHARITY [LOVE] IN ALL BELIEFS

“If I have the gift of prophecy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge; and if I have allfaith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing… But now faith, hope, love, abide these three; but the greatest of these is love.” – Corinthians 13:2-13

  7. THE BIBLE IS THE DIVINE REVELATION OF GOD TO PEOPLE

“All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.” – 2 Timothy 3:16-17

  8. THE BIBLE IS OUR FIXED SOURCE OF AUTHORITY FOR FAITH AND CONDUCT

“For this reason we also constantly thank God that when you received the word of God which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men, but for what it really is, the word of God, which also performs its work in you who believe.” – 1 Thessalonians 2:13

  9. THE BIBLE IS WITHOUT ERROR AND ENDURABLE FOR ALL GENERATIONS AND CULTURES

“The sum of Your word is truth, and every one of Your righteous ordinances is everlasting.” – Psalm 119:160

“But know this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one’s own interpretation, for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.” – 2 Peter 1:20-21

  10. GOD IS ETERNAL, HAVING ALWAYS EXISTED OUTSIDE OF TIME AND SPACE

“Then God said, ‘Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.’ God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.” – Genesis 1:26-27

“Before the mountains were born Or You gave birth to the earth and the world, Even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.” – Psalm 90:2

“‘I am the Alpha and the Omega,’ says the Lord God, ‘who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.’” – Revelation 1:8

  11. GOD IS A SINGLE BEING CONSISTING OF THREE PERSONS – FATHER, SON, AND HOLY SPIRIT

“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My [Jesus] name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.” – John 14:26

“Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.” – Matthew 28:19

“For there are three that bear witness in heaven: the Father, the Word [Jesus], and the Holy Spirit; and these three are one.” – 1 John 5:7 (NKJV)

  12. JESUS IS THE ETERNAL SON OF GOD, BOTH FULLY GOD AND FULLY MAN

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being. In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men.” – John 1:1-4

“And the Word [Jesus] became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth. John testified about Him and cried out, saying, ‘This was He of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me has a higher rank than I, for He existed before me.’ For of His fullness we have all received, and grace upon grace. For the Law was given through Moses; grace and truth were realized through Jesus Christ.” – John 1:14-17

“Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men. Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus EVERY KNEE WILL BOW, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” – Philippians 2:5-11

  13. JESUS IS CONCEIVED BY THE HOLY SPIRIT AND BORN OF A VIRGIN

Behold, the virgin [Mary] shall be with child, and bear a Son [Jesus], and they shall call His name Immanuel, which translate means, ‘God with us.’” – Matthew 1:23

“The angel said to her, ‘Do not be afraid, Mary; for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name Him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David; and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and His kingdom will have no end.’ Mary said to the angel, ‘How can this be, since I am a virgin?’ The angel answered and said to her, ‘The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; and for that reason the holy Child shall be called the Son of God.’” – Luke 1:30-35

  14. JESUS IS WITHOUT SIN

“… since Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example for you to follow in His steps, who committed no sin, nor was any deceit found in His mouth...” – 1 Peter 2:22 “Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin.” – Hebrews 4:14-15

  15. JESUS IS THE ONE WHO ULTIMATELY RESTORES MANKIND FROM SIN THROUGH THE

    SHEDDING OF HIS BLOOD

“For this is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for forgiveness of sins.” – Matthew 26:28

“And He [Jesus] said to them, ‘This is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many” – Mark 14:24

  16. JESUS IS RAISED FROM THE DEAD AND SEATED WITH THE HEAVENLY FATHER

“The angel said to the women, ‘Do not be afraid; for I know that you are looking for Jesus who has been crucified. He is not here, for He has risen, just as He said. Come, see the place where He was lying.’” – Matthew 28:5-6

“Men of Israel, listen to these words: Jesus the Nazarene, a man attested to you by God with miracles and wonders and signs which God performed through Him in your midst, just as you yourselves know—this Man, delivered over by the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God, you nailed to a cross by the hands of godless men and put Him to death. But God raised Him up again, putting an end to the agony of death, since it was impossible for Him to be held in its power.” – Acts 2:22-24

“For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures.” – 1 Corinthians 15:3-4

  17. JESUS HEALS THE SICK

“Is anyone among you sick? Then he must call for the elders of the church and they are to pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord; and the prayer offered in faith will restore the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up, and if he has committed sins, they will be forgiven him. Therefore, confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another so that you may be healed. The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much.” – James 5:14-16

“Surely our griefs He [Jesus] Himself bore, and our sorrows He carried; yet we ourselves esteemed Him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; the chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, and by His scourging we are healed.” – Isaiah 53:4-5

  18. JESUS IS RETURNING AGAIN TO REIGN ETERNALLY IN A NEW HEAVEN AND NEW EARTH

“Now, after He [Jesus] had said these things, He was lifted up while they [the disciples] were looking on, and a cloud received Him out of their sight. And as they were gazing intently into the sky while He was going, behold, two men stood by them in white clothing stood beside them. They also said, ‘Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into the sky? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in just the same way as you have watched Him go into heaven.’” – Acts 1:9-11

"Then I [John] saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth passed away, and there is no longer any sea. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, made ready as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne, saying, ‘Behold, the tabernacle of God is among men, and He will dwell among them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself will be among them.’” – Revelation 21:1-3

  19. THE HOLY SPIRIT IS PRESENT TO HELP PEOPLE BE AWARE OF THEIR NEED OF JESUS

“But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you. And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment; concerning sin, because they do not believe in Me; and concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father and you no longer see Me; and concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged.” – John 16:7-11

  20. THE HOLY SPIRIT IS PRESENT TO EMPOWER BELIEVERS TO LIVE MORE VICTORIOUSLY

“And behold, I [Jesus] am sending forth the promise of My Father upon you; but you are to stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.” – Luke 24:49

“I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you.” – John 14:16-17

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.” – Acts 1:8

  21. PEOPLE ARE MADE IN THE SPIRITUAL IMAGE OF GOD

  22. PEOPLE ARE FALLEN FROM INNOCENCE DUE TO A WILLFUL CHOICE TO DO WRONG

“When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make one wise, she took from its fruit and ate; and she gave also to her husband with her, and he ate. 7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loin coverings. They heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden.” – Genesis 3:6-8

“...for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God...” – Romans 3:23

  23. PEOPLE ARE DESTINED FOR ETERNAL SEPARATION FROM GOD UNLESS THEY ARE RECONCILED

“For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” – Romans 6:23

“Then I [John] saw a great white throne and Him who sat upon it, from whose presence earth and heaven fled away, and no place was found for them. And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and books were opened; and another book was opened, which is the book of life; and the dead were judged from the things which were written in the books, according to their deeds. And the sea gave up the dead which were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead which were in them; and they were judged, every one of them according to their deeds. Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.” – Revelation 20:11-15

  24. PEOPLE ARE PROVIDED AN OPPORTUNITY TO BE RECONCILED TO GOD

“But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him. For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. And not only this, but we also exult in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation.” – Romans 5:8-11

“For it was the Father’s good pleasure for all the fullness to dwell in Him, and through Him to reconcile all things to Himself, having made peace through the blood of His cross; through Him, I say, whether things on earth or things in heaven. And although you were formerly alienated and hostile in mind, engaged in evil deeds, yet He has now reconciled you in His fleshly body through death, in order to present you before Him holy and blameless and beyond reproach.” – Colossians 1:19-22

  25. PEOPLE ARE INVITED TO ACCEPT CHRIST, REPENT OF SIN, AND BE REGENERATED

“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.” – John 3:16-17

“Peter said to them, “Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” – Acts 2:38

“He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out upon us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that being justified by His grace we would be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.” – Titus 3:5-7

  26. PEOPLE ARE IN NEED OF SANCTIFICATION

“But examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good; abstain from every form of evil. Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. But examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good; abstain from every form of evil. Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.” – 1 Thessalonians 5:21-23“For this is the will of God, your sanctification...” – 1 Thessalonians 4:3

  27. PEOPLE ARE COMMANDED TO RELINQUISH THE AUTHORITY OVER THEIR LIVES TO CHRIST

“You shall therefore obey the Lord your God, and do His commandments and His statutes which I command you today.” – Deuteronomy 27:10

“Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take away the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute? May it never be! Or do you not know that the one who joins himself to a prostitute is one body with her? For He says, ‘The two shall become one flesh.’ But the one who joins himself to the Lord is one spirit with Him. Flee immorality. Every other sin that a man commits is outside the body, but the immoral man sins against his own body. Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? 20 For you have been bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body.” – 1 Corinthians 6:15-20

“But this is what I [the Lord] commanded them, saying, ‘Obey My voice, and I will be your God, and you will be My people; and you will walk in all the way which I command you, that it may be well with you.’” – Jeremiah 7:23

  28. THE CHURCH IS THE BODY OF CHRIST CONSISTING OF ALL BELIEVERS IN ALL NATIONS AND IN ALL GENERATIONS

“For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.”1 Corinthians 12:13

  29. THE CHURCH IS CALLED TO OBSERVE THE ORDINANCE OF BAPTISM

“Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit...”Matthew 28:19

“‘Surely no one can refuse the water for these [Gentiles associated with Cornelius in Caesarea] to be baptized who have received the Holy Spirit just as we [Jews in Peter’s delegation] did?’ And he ordered them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ.”Acts 10:47-48

  30. THE CHURCH IS CALLED TO OBSERVE THE ORDINANCE OF HOLY COMMUNION

“And when He [Jesus] had taken a cup and given thanks, He said, ‘Take this and share it among yourselves [the 12 disciples]; for I say to you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine from now on until the kingdom of God comes.’ And when He had taken some bread and given thanks, He broke it and gave it to them, saying, ‘This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.’ And in the same way He took the cup after they had eaten, saying, ‘This cup which is poured out for you is the new covenant in My blood.’” – Luke 22:17-20

“For I [Paul] received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus in the night in which He was betrayed took bread; and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, ‘This is My body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of Me.’ In the same way He took the cup also after supper, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.’ For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.”1 Corinthians 11:23-26

  31. THE FUTURE IS HOPEFUL FOR THE BELIEVER

“But according to His promise we are looking for new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells.” – 2 Peter 3:13

“For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then we who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we shall always be with the Lord.” – 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17

“For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all men, instructing us to deny ungodliness and worldly desires and to live sensibly, righteously and godly in the present age, looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus…” – Titus 2:11-13

“Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth passed away, and there is no longer any sea. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, made ready as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne, saying, ‘Behold, the tabernacle of God is among men, and He will dwell among them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself will be among them, and He will wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there will no longer be any death; there will no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; the first things have passed away.’ And He who sits on the throne said, ‘Behold, I am making all things new.’ And He said, ‘Write, for these words are faithful and true.’” – Revelation 21:1-5

  32. THE FUTURE IS DISMAL AND BLEAK FOR THE UNBELIEVER

“Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God.” – 1 Corinthians 6:9-10

“For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse. For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man and of birds and four-footed animals and crawling creatures. Therefore God gave them over in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, so that their bodies would be dishonored among them. For they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever.” – Romans 1:20-25

  33. SIN IS A CONDITION OF THE HUMAN HEART THAT FALLS SHORT OF GOD’S STANDARD OF PERFECTION

“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” – Romans 3:23

  34. SIN IS A REPROACH TO ANY PEOPLE

“Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people.” – Proverbs 14:34

“For what the Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God did: sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh, so that the requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.” – Romans 8:3-4

“Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.” – Galatians 5:19-21

  35. THE CHURCH IS GOD’S DESIGN FOR FELLOWSHIP, WORSHIP, TEACHING, EVANGELISM, SERVICE, AND IS BOTH A LOCAL AND UNIVERSAL EXPRESSION OF CHRIST

“For where two or three have gathered together in My name, I am there in their midst.” – Matthew 18:20

“… and let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near.” – Hebrews 10:24-25

“… the household of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and support of the truth.” – 1 Timothy 3:15

“And He put all things in subjection under His feet, and gave Him as head over all things to the church, which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.” – Ephesians 1:22-23

“… upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it.” – Matthew 16:18

“For just as we have many members in one body and all the members do not have the same function, so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. Since we have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, each of us is to exercise them accordingly…” – Romans 12:4-6

“For even as the body is one and yet has many members, and all the members of the body, though they are many, are one body, so also is Christ. For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit. For the body is not one member, but many…. Now you are Christ’s body, and individually members of it.” – 2 Corinthians 12:12-14, 27

“There is one body and one Spirit, just as also you were called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all who is over all and through all and in all. But to each one of us grace was given according to the measure of Christ’s gift… And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ; until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ… but speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ, from whom the whole body, being fitted and held together by what every joint supplies, according to the proper working of each individual part, causes the growth of the body for the building up of itself in love.” – Ephesians 4:4-6, 11-13, 15-16

  36. MATRIMONY IS ORDAINED BY GOD

“Then the LORD God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make him a helper suitable for him.” – Genesis 2:18

“Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be prolonged in the land which the Lord your God gives you...” – Exodus 20:12

“So the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; then He took one of his ribs and closed up the flesh at that place. The LORD God fashioned into a woman the rib which He had taken from the man, and brought her to the man. The man said, ‘This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.’ For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother, and be joined to his wife; and they shall become one flesh.” – Genesis 2:21-24

“‘For I hate divorce,’ says the Lord, the God of Israel…” – Malachi 2:16

  37. MATRIMONY IS A HOLY MONOGAMOUS MARRIAGE BETWEEN ONE MAN AND ONE WOMAN

“For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother, and be joined to his wife; and they shall become one flesh.” – Genesis 2:24

“… each man is to have his own wife, and each woman is to have her own husband. The husband must fulfill his duty to his wife, and likewise also the wife to her husband. The wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does; and likewise also the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does.” – 1 Corinthians 7:2-4

“For the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ also is the head of the church, He Himself being the Savior of the body... For this reason [Eve created out of Adam – bone of his bone, flesh of his flesh] a man shall leave his father and mother and shall be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” – Ephesians 5:23, 31

“Marriage is to be held in honor among all, and the marriage bed is to be undefiled...” – Hebrews 13:4

  38. MATRIMONY IS THE BASIC UNIT OF SOCIETY THROUGH ITS MINISTRY AND TESTIMONY

“Wives, be subject to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ also is the head of the church, He Himself being the Savior of the body. But as the church is subject to Christ, so also the wives ought to be to their husbands in everything. Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her, so that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, that He might present to Himself the church in all her glory, having no spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that she would be holy and blameless. So husbands ought also to love their own wives as their own bodies. He who loves his own wife loves himself; for no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ also does the church, because we are members of His body. For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and shall be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. This mystery is great; but I am speaking with reference to Christ and the church. Nevertheless, each individual among you also is to love his own wife even as himself, and the wife must see to it that she respects her husband.” – Ephesians 5:22-33

    • The foundational and biblical understanding of marriage is that it represents God’s design for procreation, as well as a “one flesh” covenant, not only between a man and a woman, but also a divinely intended expression of the covenant between Christ and His church.

  39. STATEMENT ON GENDER AND SEXUALITY

“So God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.” – Genesis 1:27

    • This means that man and woman are two distinct genders willed by God, their Creator, in their respective beings, which reflect the image and nature of God. “Being man” or “being woman” is a reality that is good and willed by God, and demonstrates the complementary, relational nature of the human race. – Romans 1:24-27; Job 42:1-3; Isaiah 55:8-9
    • Scripture grants two life-enhancing options for sexual behavior: monogamous marital relations between one man and one woman (Genesis 1:27-28, 2:18, 21-24; Matthew 19:4-6; Mark 10:5-8; cf. Hebrews 13:4) or sexual celibacy (1 Corinthians 7:7; Matthew 19:12). Both orientations are a gift from God, given as He wills for His glory and should be received as such.
    • The fall of humankind in the Garden of Eden, and the effects of sin, have damaged and compromised God’s original plan for everything on the earth, including our sexuality. Regardless of the source for same-sex attraction (genetics, the environment, abuse, etc.), this does not imply intent on God’s part or render samesex attraction as legitimate. Careful distinction should be made between same-sex attraction, sinful lust, self-selected identification, and sexual behavior. Temptation, including sexual attraction (same-sex or opposite-sex), is not sin; however, yielding to the temptation is. Jesus was also tempted and yet did not sin (Matthew 4:1-11; Hebrews 4:15).
    • Any sexual immorality (including, but not limited to, adultery, fornication, homosexual behavior, bisexual conduct, bestiality, incest, and use of pornography) is sinful. – Galatians 5:19-21; I Corinthians 6:9-10
    • As men and women “put on Christ” – the model for all chastity – they pledge to lead a chaste life consistent with their vocation, either by consecrating themselves to God or entering the God-ordained institution of marriage. A chaste person respects the gift of sexuality given to him or her by God. Married people are called to live in conjugal chastity. “Marriage” has only one meaning: the matrimonial covenant, by which one man and one woman unite themselves in a lifelong partnership. God commands that the gift of sexual intimacy occur only between spouses of the opposite sex who are joined in Holy Matrimony. – 1 Thessalonians 4:1-8; Romans 13:13-14; Hebrews 13:4
    • The Apostle Paul affirms that for believers, “immorality or any impurity or greed must not even be named among you…” (Ephesians 5:3). While some heterosexual acts are sinful, according to Scripture (both in the Old and New Testaments), all homosexual acts are sinful (Genesis 19:4-11 [cf. 2 Peter 2:6-7; Jude 7]; Leviticus 18:22, 20:13; Judges 19:22-25; Romans 1:24-27; 1 Corinthians 6:9-11; 1 Timothy 1:8-11).
    • As God’s image bearers, man and woman have inalienable rights and ensuing responsibilities. Men and women should be treated with dignity and respect. They should also lead lives worthy of the dignity of their unique gender. This is done by living chastely – a commandment all Christians are called to follow. – Ephesians 5:3
    • In the Spirit of Christ, every person deserves to be treated with compassion, love, respect, and dignity, regardless of his or her position on Church teaching. Hateful behavior is inconsistent with the Gospel of Christ and the doctrine of the Church and should always be repudiated. The Church must actively seek ways to reach out and show Christian love to those who identify as LGBTQ.
